Kenai’s Allie Ostrander crests a hill Saturday on her way to winning the Region III girls cross country championship at Tsalteshi Trails. The event was held in Soldotna due to heavy rains in Seward earlier in the week.

All eyes were on Kenai Central’s Allie Ostrander as she looked to defend her Region III cross-country title at Tsalteshi Trails on Saturday afternoon.
The race was originally scheduled to be held in Seward, but heavy rainfall forced the meet to be moved to Tsalteshi.
After the first of three laps of the girls Class 4A race, Wasilla’s Mariah Burroughs was only a few seconds behind Ostrander. As Ostrander passed the starting line to enter her third lap, however, it seemed as if she was the only runner on the course.
A little over 18 minutes after the five-kilometer race began, Ostrander cruised to another first-place finish and a second-consecutive Region III championship.
“I think I had a pretty good race. I stuck it out in the end, but I think my first 2K were too fast for the pace and it took a toll on the rest of my race,” Ostrander said.
The toll it took on her race was unapparent in the results. She finished nearly a minute ahead of the second-place finisher, Colony’s Audrey Michaelson.
Next up for the sophomore running sensation, a shot at the state title. After getting disqualified in last year’s ASAA First National Bank Cross-Country State Championships in Anchorage, Ostrander looks to finish the cross-country season strong.
Despite having an early lead at last year’s state championships, Ostrander collapsed near the fourth kilometer. After walking the final kilometer, she was then disqualified because her teammates accompanied her during the final paces of the race.
Ostrander looks to finish this season on top.
“I want to finish off my season this year. I don’t want it to be cut short,” she said.
Looking to defend a Region III team title were the Wasilla girls. Wasilla made it a three-peat this year after dominating the last two region championships.
Wasilla finished with 41 fewer points than Colony, which took second place with 70 team points. Soldotna High School earned the third and final berth to state with 73 team points. The Kodiak girls just missed their chance of making it to state, as only the top three 4A schools go, after earning 76 points.
The Region III Class 3A girls race was dominated by Grace Christian, which finished the race with a perfect score of 15 points. Grace Christian was powered to first place after sweeping the top five spots and bringing in all seven of their racers in the top 10.
Homer High School, which dropped from 4A to 3A this year after enrollment numbers went down, finished 40 points behind Grace Christian to come in second. Seward High School came in third with 78 points and Valdez came in fourth. The top four teams from the 3A schools advance to state in Anchorage next week.
In the Class 3A boys race, Miles Knotek defended his title, coming in with a time of 17:11, five seconds ahead of Glennallen’s Arlen Mossgrove. Levi Thomet of Kodiak took home the crown in the Class 4A boys race with a time of 16:30.
In the Class 1-2-3A boys race, Seward took home the team title and will advance to state, followed by Grace Christian, Anchorage Christian and in the fourth and final spot, Homer.
Kodiak finished in first place for the Class 4A boys. Colony took second and Kenai Central came in third.
Individuals qualifying for state by finishing in the top 15 were Kenai Central’s Hope Steffensen in sixth, Soldotna’s Dani McCormick in eighth and Soldotna’s Olivia Hutchings in ninth, although the Soldotna runner also qualified as a team. Skyview’s Micah Hilbish came in fifth and Sam Janorschke came in tenth.

Nikolaevsk does well at Region II meet
The Nikolaevsk Warriors qualified seven runners to the 2A State championship meet on Saturday at the Region II Championships at SuValley in Talkeetna.
Freshman Megan Hickman finished sixth in the girls race with a time 22:51 to qualify individually, while the Nikolaevsk boys qualified as a team, finishing second in the team standings with 30 points. Galena won the boys championship with 25 points.
Senior Blake Klaich finished second with a time of 18:29, freshman Greg Trail was sixth in a time of 19:25, and freshman Nicetas Lasiter was seventh, running a time of 20:00.
Seniors Eric Mametieff and Frank Holub and freshman Jonah Fefelov complete the remainder of the state-bound team.
