Kodiak football tops Skyview

The Kodiak football topped host Skyview 20-14 on Sunday at Skyview in Northern Lights Conference play.

The game was moved to Sunday because Kodiak had trouble getting to Skyview on Saturday due to the lateness of the ferry.

The Bears finish the regular season with a 3-2 record in the NLC and a 4-4 mark overall. The Panthers finish at 0-5 and 1-7.

Kodiak finishes third in the NLC, meaning the Bears will travel to play NLC champ Soldotna in the first round of the medium-schools playoffs. That game will be Saturday but the game time still has not been determined.

In the other matchup, Homer, which finished second in the NLC, travels to play Southeast Conference champ Thunder Mountain on Friday at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the Bears relied on special teams and defense for their scoring.

Kodiak took the opening kickoff back for a score, but missed the two-point conversion. Later in the first quarter, Skyview blocked a punt, setting up a touchdown run by senior Kyle Zimmerman.

In the second quarter, Zimmerman threw a touchdown pass to junior Tyler Howell for a 14-6 Skyview lead, but Kodiak took back the kickoff for a 14-12 game at halftime.

The Bears took the lead for good at the start of the fourth quarter on an interception return of about 15 yards.

“We did a pretty good job on defense, and that was good to see,” Skyview coach Eric Pomerleau said. “A couple of turnovers on offense really hurt us. Kick coverage hurt us too.”

Pomerleau said the Panthers moved the ball on offense better than the Bears, but that was not enough to overcome the turnovers and kickoff returns. He said Justin West ran the ball for the Panthers.

Despite finishing with one win, the Panthers were in a lot of games and bring back key players at many positions.

“Every season is a blessing and a challenge all wrapped into one,” Pomerleau said. “I’m proud of the seniors and I also think there are some expectations for the younger kids.”
