Skyview; Nikiski volleyball teams earn wins

The Skyview volleyball team beat Seward in Southcentral Conference play three games to none, Tuesday evening in Seward, with game scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-15.

The sweep improves the Panthers’ overall record to 6-3, while Seward drops to 3-4 overall.

Skyview was led by Cheyanne Labers, sporting eight kills, three assists, eight service points and one block.

Teammates Marlee Cunningham had 14 kills and three blocks, Sam Reynolds notched 20 set assists and five kills, Hayley Ramsell had seven set assists, Holly Ramsell had eight service points, and Casey Neill racked up eight service points.

Seward’s Tessa Adelmann had three digs and Ashley Whiteshield produced two kills.

“After a bit, they picked it up, and we changed some things around and adjusted,” Skyview coach Sheila Kupferschmid said.

Skyview will be hosting Cordova on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., while Seward will welcome Anchorage Christian on Friday at 3 p.m.

Nikiski 3, Homer 1

The Bulldogs rallied back from a game deficit to post three straight wins and defeat the Mariners Tuesday evening in Nikiski.

Homer won the first game 25-23, but Nikiski came back to win with scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21.

Nikiski’s Rachel Thompson tallied 32 assists on a night that Nikiski coach Stacey Segura called a “little rough around the edges”.

“I expect them to play better, but they learned a lesson mentally,” Segura said. “Mentally, we had to come together, and the girls learned to do that this game. It wasn’t necessarily about skill level or style of play, but the girls had to mentally work on focusing to make those things work. It was really funky out there.”

Sienna Wallis had three service aces, seven kills and four blocks, Taylor Calderwood produced 20 digs and eight kills, Bailey Buchholz had 11 kills and four blocks, and Paris Davis stepped in to record 17 digs for Nikiski.

Nikiski stands now with a 6-1 conference record and 8-1 overall.
