Skyview, Nikiski earn state berths by reaching Southcentral title game

The Skyview and Nikiski volleyball teams earned state berths by playing their way into the finals of the Southcentral Conference volleyball tournament in Cordova on Friday.

Nikiski, the top seed out of the Southern Division, started the day by defeating Houston, then reached the final by toppling Seward. Skyview knocked off the hosts, then downed Grace Christian, the Northern Division No. 1 seed which had previously been perfect in the conference.

Skyview and Nikiski split in conference play this year.

Peninsula teams Homer and Seward must win the third-place bracket to earn state berths. Homer plays Cordova at 8 a.m., then the winner plays Seward at noon for a spot in the third-place match. Anchorage Christian Schools, Grace and Houston are on the other side of the third-place bracket.

Skyview and Nikiski will play 20 minutes after the third-place match, which is slated for 6 p.m.
