Area players compete in Senior Bowl

A group of football players from the Kenai Peninsula competed in the 36th annual North vs. South Senior Bowl on Nov. 3 in Anchorage.

The Peninsula players made up the small-medium school South team. That squad lost 34-22 to the North team.

Kenai Central’s Duncan Brewer was named the defensive player of the game for the South, while Skyview’s DJ Collier was offensive player of the game.

Other members of the team were Reid Schmelzenbach of Soldotna; Marcus Thornburgh, Gabe Holley and Jake Lawson of Skyview; Wyatt Fitt, Luke Short, Grayden Mendenhall, Brad Smithwick and Josh Liedes of Kenai Central; and Stephen Hartley, Devon Berry, Lincoln Johnson and Jesse Ross of Nikiski.

Brewer, who was also the medium-schools state lineman of the year, said it was a great experience to end his high school career. He said too much should not be read into the final score, because of things like numerous onside kicks.
