Homer hockey comes up short in Houston

Homer lost its final two games of a three-game weekend tournament on Friday and Saturday at the ninth annual Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Hockey Tournament in Wasilla.

On Friday, the Mariners dropped a 10-3 game to East Anchorage, then were shut out 7-0 on Saturday against Lathrop to finish off a tough weekend.

“We knew what we were up against, and we’re not deep enough,” Homer coach Buck Laukitis said. “We had three players gone.”

The three Sanarov brothers — Alex, Dennis and Kiril — were not traveling with the Mariners due to time taken off for vacation. Homer was outshot 57-15 in Saturday’s game against Lathrop.

“We know what it’s going to take and what we need to work on now,” Laukitis said. “We had a tough time (with Lathrop). At least with East, we were generating scoring chances.”

Markian Polushkin filled in as goalkeeper for Homer.
