The cross-country ski season opened with the Flat-out Flight Races on Headquarters Lake in Soldotna on Saturday.

“People were really happy to race because the kids have been training,” Skyview ski coach Kent Peterson said. “It was nice to actually work with the community and the refuge and find a place to race in a low-snow year.”

Soldotna, Homer, Kenai, Nikiski and Skyview attended the races. The boys and girls were each broken into three flights based on experience and ability. Each race was about six kilometers.

“It was kind of nice,” Peterson said. “Rather than have a class race where a senior that never skied before raced an experienced senior, this way they are separated by ability.”

Dillon Jensen of Soldotna won the Flight 1 for the boys, with Luke Michael of SoHi taking second. Both were timed at 18 minutes, 35 seconds. Brian Rowe of Homer was third at 18:49.

Kenai’s Jordan Theisen won the second flight in 20:21, while Skyview’s Ryder Galic won the third flight in 12:30.

The winner of the girls Flight 1 race was Sadie Fox in 20:32, while Homer’s Barae Hirsch was second at 23:48, and Kenai’s Alex Bergholtz was third at 23:57.

The Flight 2 race went to Mikaela Salzetti of Kenai in 25:51, while Flight 3 went to Maddie Michaud of Kenai at 12:48.
