Oilers add 2 from Fresno State University

Jake Alvarez will return to the Oilers in 2013 and will be accompanied by his Fresno State teammate, Taylor Tempel.

Alvarez, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound infield junior, hit .206 in 19 games with the Oilers this year and left the team early last season to return home for treatment of an injury. In 2012 for Fresno State, he made 49 game appearances, earning 36 starts and scoring 25 runs. He hit his first home run as a Bulldog against Louisiana Tech on May 18. Alvarez had five doubles and went 6 for 6 on stolen bases, recording 12 RBI with a season batting average of .320. He was named second-team All-Western Athletic Conference, All-Tournament Team for 2012 and 2012 Academic All-WAC team. Alvarez tied for the team’s highest hitting streak record with 11 hits set from April 28 through May 19. He is from Fresno, Calif.

Tempel, a 6-0, 170-pound outfield sophomore, played in 42 games in 2012 for Fresno State, earning 21 starts. Tempel hit his first home run against San Francisco on March 10. He recorded 17 hits, eight runs, four RBI and two doubles, and batted .191 with a fielding percentage of .979. Tempel was named to 2012 Academic All-WAC team and calls Clovis, Calif., home.
