CIA girls, Nikolaevsk boys win Cook Inlet Classic

The Nikolaevsk boys and Cook Inlet Academy girls polished off titles at the Cook Inlet Classic on Saturday with victories. Both squads finished the round-robin tournament 3-0.

The Nikolaevsk boys topped Nanwalek 75-44 behind 25 points from Blake Klaich. Jonah Fefelov added 12 points, while Eric Mametieff had 11 and Neil Gordeev and Anthony Yakunin had 10 points apiece.

For the Eagles, John Romanoff had 18 points and Roderick Wilson III had 14.

The CIA girls finished 3-0 at the tournament by taking down the Soldotna JV 26-21. Nicole Moffis paced the Eagles with eight points, while Serena Prior had seven points for SoHi.

In other tourney action Saturday, the Nikolaevsk girls took second place by topping Ninilchik 37-12. The Wolverines were 0-3 at the tourney.

The Warriors put nine players in the scoring column, led by Nianiella Dorvall with eight points. Kaylee Smith had nine points to lead all scorers for Ninilchik.

In the final game of the tournament, the CIA boys topped Soldotna JV 52-41. The CIA boys took second at the tournament, while SoHi JV was third.

Koebryn Mlynarik led the charge for the Eagles with 27 points, while Timmy Smithwick chipped in 13. For SoHi JV, Brooks Furlong had 10 points.

Soldotna JV girls 31, Ninilchik 7

The Stars used a tough defense to take down the Wolverines on Friday at the Cook Inlet Classic at Cook Inlet Academy.

Hailey Miller had eight points to pace the Stars, while Kaylee Smith had four points for Ninilchik.

Cook Inlet Academy girls 38, Nikolaevsk 30

The Eagles won the showdown of two teams expected to be the top squads in the Peninsula Conference. The game also counted toward the Peninsula Conference standings.

CIA was able to gradually expand the lead throughout the game, and then hold the Warriors to three points in the final period.

Nicole Moffis had 15 points for CIA, while Megan Bauder had 10. For Nikolaevsk, Kilina Klaich, Sophia Kalugin and Megan Hickman had six points.

Soldotna JV 76, Nanwalek 14

Brooks Furlong had 25 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Stars past the Eagles.

Also for SoHi JV, James Lee had 11 points and Drew Fowler added 10.

For Nanwalek, John Romanoff had eight points.

Nikolaevsk boys 63, Eagles 61

The Warriors served notice to the defending Peninsula Conference champion Eagles that they have their sights set on their crown.

Nikolaevsk got 30 points from Eric Mametieff in pulling out the close game. Anatoli Fefelov added 12 points, while Anthony Yakunin had 11 and Blake Klaich had 10.

For the Eagles, freshman Timmy Smithwick pumped in a game-high 34 points, while Koebryn Mlynarik had 16 points.
