Oilers sign 2 from Cal Poly

Teammates Michael Hoo and Alex Michaels have committed to the Oilers for the 2013 season. Cal Poly is the school that the 2011 Alaska Baseball League MVP Mike Miller attended. Miller is currently playing minor league baseball for the Boston Red Sox.

Hoo is a 6-foot-0, 190-pound redshirt junior infielder. He sat out the 2012 season with a knee injury. In 2011, Hoo played in 15 games, mostly at first base, with one start at third base. He handled 24 chances without an error and played summer ball for the Menlo Park Legends, hitting .222 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Hoo also stole five bases in six attempts. His hometown is Cupertino, Calif.

Michaels is a 6-3, 215-pound sophomore outfielder. He injured his shoulder in the second game of the 2012 season and was sidelined the rest of the season. As a high school junior in 2010, he hit .482 with 53 hits, 30 RBIs, 14 doubles, one home run and seven stolen bases en route to first-team All-Area and second-team all-state underclassmen honors. Michaels is an Area Code finalist and played for the San Francisco Giants scout team. He hit .420 as a sophomore. Michaels lettered four times in both baseball and football and also lettered in basketball as a freshman and sophomore. His hometown is Stockton, Calif.

All ABL general managers will be in Chicago from Jan. 2 to 6 for the American Baseball Coaches Association Convention. The convention gives the GM’s a chance to network with college coaches from all over the country. This is a great resource for recruiting. More information can be found at www.abca.org.

James Clark is the general manager for the Peninsula Oilers.
