Saturday basketball roundup

The Soldotna girls basketball team won its second tournament of the young season by defeating Palmer 58-55 for the Lady T-Bird Classic title in Anchorage on Saturday.

The Stars were pushed harder than they have been all season by the Moose. Palmer led 30-19 at the half, but SoHi came back to take a 43-42 lead after three quarters before holding on for the victory.

SoHi was out-rebounded 45-30, but produced enough turnovers for the win. Palmer turned it over 25 times compared to 10 for the Stars.

Julie Litchfield had an efficient 22 points for Soldotna, hitting 7 of 12 from the field and 6 of 7 from the foul line.

For Palmer, Taylor Blake had 18 points, while Leya DePriest had 15 and Caitlin Scott added 11.

Kaillee Skjold was named the tournament MVP for the Stars, while Litchfield and Kelci Benson also were named to the all-tournament team.

Also from the area, Seward’s Jasmine Perea made the team.

The host Thunderbirds took third at their tourney by topping Kenai 61-41.

The Kards outrebounded the T-Birds 37-34, but East was 43.9 percent from the floor, while Kenai was 32 percent.

Togafiti Manu had 19 points for East, while Taria Page had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

For Kenai, Sydney Taylor pumped in a game-high 21 points, while Caitie Steinbeck paced the team with nine rebounds.

Marian Wamsley led Valdez to a 55-44 victory over Seward in the fifth-place game.

Wamsley had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Katy Merioles had 16 points and Sara Sapp added 10 points.

For Seward, Perea had 16 points, while Tessa Adelmann chipped in 12 before fouling out.

In the seventh-place game, Kotzebue notched a 56-37 victory over Eagle River.

In Friday’s semifinals, Soldotna defeated Kenai 50-26. The Kards trailed 12-11 after the first quarter, but after that Soldotna steadily pulled away.

Skjold led the way for the Stars with 19 points and seven rebounds. Skjold was 7 of 16 from the floor. Benson and Heidi Westerman each had eight points for the Stars.

For Kenai, Taylor had 11 points.

Kenai was able to out-rebound Soldotna 31-25, but the Kards had 31 turnovers to SoHi’s 12.

In the other semifinal, Palmer defeated East 56-53.

Also Friday, Seward picked up a 45-42 victory over Kotzebue. The Seahawks were down 24-13 at halftime but outscored the Huskies 32-18 in the second half.

Ashley VonBorstel had 16 points for the Seahawks, while Perea had 14. For Kotzebue, Colleen Snyder led all scorers with 20 points.

In other consolation action Friday, Valdez edged Eagle River 50-49.

Grace Christian Grizzly Classic

The Dimond boys and Grace Christian girls wrapped up tournament titles Saturday in Anchorage. Both teams finished 3-0 at the round-robin event.

The Soldotna boys finished the tournament with a 2-1 record after topping host Grace Christian, 66-53.

The Stars held a 47-44 lead entering the final eight minutes, but outscored the Grizzlies 19-9 in the final frame.

Cory Carver paced the Stars with 20 points, while Austin Kruse had 12, Colton Young had 11 and Noah Fowler pitched in 10.

For Grace, Hans Karlberg had 15 points while Luke Offord pitched in 14 points.

Also Saturday, the Homer girls topped Service 42-31 to finish the tourney at 2-1. Tayla Cabana led a balanced attack for Homer with 12 points. Alissa Nanez paced the Cougars with 10 points.

Finally, on Saturday, Homer finished 0-3 with a 55-32 loss to Dimond. Sam Reinert’s nine points led the Mariners. The Grace girls wrapped their title with a 25-23 victory over Bethel.

The Soldotna boys improved to 1-1 at the tournament on Friday with a 69-36 victory over Homer.

Carver led the way with 17 points, while Fowler chipped in with 15.

For Homer, Brandon Beachy had nine points.

Also Friday, the Homer girls defeated Bethel 40-38 in overtime.

Hayley Oliver and Cabana each had 12 points, while Rebecca Brink had 13 points for the Warriors.

Also Friday, the Grace girls topped Service 37-32. The Dimond boys scored a 59-47 victory over Grace.
