Kenai, SoHi pucksters compete in alumni game

The Soldotna Stars had the upper hand in the Kenai-SoHi Hockey Alumni Game last Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center, defeating Kenai 8-4 in front of a crowd of over 400 fans. Many former Stars and Kards faced off again against each other, much like old times.

For SoHi, it was the team’s second consecutive Alumni game win, after the previous four years of losses.

Soldotna was led by Johnny Mills’ one goal and four assists. In addition, Zach Waters had two goals and Matt Vasilie put up two goals and one assist. Kenai’s Zach Zulkanycz had two goals and an assist and teammate Dom Eubank had a goal and an assist. Coaches were Gabe Gabriel, Joe Gabriel and Johnny Bea for Kenai, and Dan Green and Dean Glick for Soldotna.

After an early SoHi goal from Anthony Zurfluh, Kenai took the lead on the strength of two goals from Joel Christianson and Eubank. However, SoHi tied it up with a goal from Waters, and broke the game open in the second period, scoring four goals to Kenai’s one.

Even with the loss, Kenai outshot its rival massively, taking 59 shots to 25 from Soldotna. That meant SoHi goalie Cody Harvey had a busy night, but he held up, recording 55 saves. Harvey is actually a current Soldotna player, but the Stars were unable to find an alumni goalie, so Harvey was allowed to play.

In the Sumo Hockey game, Soldotna Mayor Peter Micciche and Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre formed the winning team over Pete Iverson and Greg Zorbas. The final score was 4-3 with the winning goal coming with 10 seconds left in the five-minute game.
