Weekend hoops roundup

The Skyview girls and boys basketball teams both finished winless at the Lime Solar/Pepsi Invitational on Saturday at Anchorage Christian Schools.

The Skyview boys finished up play Saturday by losing to Barrow 58-30.

Lawrence Kaleak paced a balanced Barrow attack with 12 points, while Glenn Suvlu added 10 points.

For Skyview, Jacob Carlson had nine points.

Also Saturday, the Skyview girls finished up the tournament with a 57-31 loss to Bethel.

Rebecca Brink had 20 points to lead the Warriors, while Riana Joseph pitched in 11 points.

For Skyview, Samantha Reynolds led the way with eight points.

Friday, the Skyview boys dropped a 48-40 decision to Valdez.

The Panthers trailed 22-21 at halftime, but Valdez was able to slowly pull away in the second half.

Levi Auble paced Valdez with 11 points, while DJ Collier had 12 points for the Panthers.

Also Friday, the Glennallen girls notched a 46-20 victory over Skyview.

The Panthers fell behind 22-2 at halftime. Ariana Dougall had 16 points for Glennallen, while Kelti Lorence had 15 points.

For Skyview, Reynolds had seven points.

 

Ninilchik girls, boys finish Peninsula Conference road trip

The Ninilchik girls and boys basketball teams finished up a Peninsula Conference road trip Saturday.

The Ninilchik girls defeated Birchwood Christian 28-26 on Friday and Wasilla Lake Christian 38-19 on Saturday. The Wolverines are 3-1 in the league and 3-4 overall.

The Ninilchik boys lost 48-30 to Birchwood Christian on Friday, then defeated Wasilla Lake Christian 58-42 on Saturday. The Wolverines are now 2-1 in the league and 2-2 overall.

On Friday, Ninilchik’s Melissa Ehlers hit a shot with six seconds left to give the Wolverines the lead. Kaylee Smith assisted on the play.

“It was a really tough game,” Ninilchik coach Rod Van Saun said. “The kids gutted it out all the way to the end and came up with a big play to seal the win.”

Van Saun said Saturday belonged to freshman Krista Sinclair, who had 10 points, seven rebounds, five steals and only one turnover.

In the boys game Friday, Ninilchik was up 11-7 after the first quarter, but Wolverines coach Nickolas Finley said Birchwood Christian pulled away in the second half. Jack Wheeler led Ninilchik with 18 points.

On Saturday, the Wolverines went up 23-4 after the first quarter en route to victory. Wheeler had 26 points, while Jayke Cooper had 18 points.

The Wolverines are back in action Saturday when they host Seldovia at 5 p.m. (girls) and 6:30 p.m. (boys).
