Skyview Invite results

Posted: January 12, 2013 - 11:50pm

While the warming temperatures played havoc on the central Kenai Peninsula on Saturday, it actually created fast times for prep skiers at the Skyview Invite, a two-day event that began on Friday.

The Grace Christian girls dominated the team standings on both days, winning with a combined time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 41 seconds on Friday (six minutes faster than runner-up Homer), then taking a 1:54:02 victory on Saturday over Colony (2:06:30). The race times of the top four skiers from each team are combined for the team score.

On the boys side, the team rankings were much closer, but it was Soldotna that topped all the others with a Friday score of 1:02:02 (58 seconds faster than Grace), and a Saturday score of 2:10:19 (44 seconds ahead of Colony).

Sophomore Sadie Fox of Soldotna topped all girls in Friday’s six-kilometer skate event with a time of 16:51, edging Anna Trujillo of Grace by five seconds. On Saturday, Fox said she was watching out for the Grace girls, which also includes Claire Trujillo and Elle Arnold.

“The three Grace girls were right in there, but it was really fast,” Fox said. “I’m fighting a cold. I wasn’t really expecting to win (on Friday) but it was nice that I did.”

Fox said the warmer conditions on Saturday created fast trails, and most teams were using klister for grip on the bottom of their skis. Klister is a gray, gooey, sticky substance that is used in the warmest and iciest of conditions, and provides the necessary grip for classic skiing.

“The rain made it really fast, because it kind of iced over, so the biggest thing was that it was really wet,” Fox said. “It actually wasn’t that bad, it was really wet, but we had good kick.”

Elle Arnold ended up topping Fox by 17 seconds on Saturday with a time of 26:45 in the 7.5-kilometer race.

Homer’s Barae Hirsch was fifth in Friday’s race to lead the Mariners, and Kenai’s top skier was Alex Bergholtz.

Soldotna’s Luke Michael echoed Fox’s thoughts, saying the trails were fast due to the ice.

“I felt really good about today’s race,” Michael said. “Yesterday was a little rougher than I would’ve liked, but it comes with the territory. You just got to race as hard as you can.”

Michael finished fourth on Friday, one spot better than his younger brother Levi, with a time of 14:57. On Saturday, Michael ended up second overall, 43 seconds behind Daniel Serventi of Grace.

“(Levi) is racing really well too, so we’ll see,” Michael said about the close competition with his brother. “It’ll be interesting, it’s going to be a great season, I love racing with him and it’s fun to have him on the team.”

While most teams were using klister for kick, Kenai was using something a little less popular — the late Dave Feeken’s “Klister in a can.” According to Kenai coach Brad Nyquist, Dave Feeken (who passed away in 2008) created a special sticky wax that could work better than the standard product.

Perhaps it worked better than most, as Travis Cooper led the boys with a third-place finish on Friday, then backed it up with a fifth place result on Saturday.

Next weekend, the high school racing season will take a break as the Besh Cup rolls into town for the third and fourth races of the season in that competition. Saturday begins with a freestyle sprint at the Tsalteshi Trails and Sunday features a mass-start classic event with men skiing 15 kilometers and women 7.5 kilometers.
