CIA girls, boys compete at Yakutat tourney

The Cook Inlet Academy girls and boys basketball teams played in the Mount St. Elias Classic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Yakutat.

The CIA boys went 0-3, losing to Cordova, Klawock and Yakutat.

“It was definitely a good learning experience,” CIA boys coach Justin Franchino said.

He said the team’s biggest problem right now is committing too many turnovers.

The Eagles girls went 2-1, losing big to Klawock before topping Cordova and Yakutat.

Nicole Moffis made the all-tournament team for the girls, while Mylon Weems earned the nod for the boys.

Franchino said the biggest takeaway from the tournament is the quality of the Klawock girls and boys. The coach said both would have to be considered one of the favorites, if not the favorite, for the Class 1A title.

The Klawock girls are led by Tonya Busse and Cassi Williams, while the boys have Tyrus Morgan.

“I think somebody said he has had a dunk in every game,” Franchino said of Morgan.
