The Dimond girls basketball team finished off its weekend with a dominant 70-34 win over the Kenai Central Kardinals on Saturday afternoon at Kenai.

The Lynx defeated Soldotna on Friday in a similar 70-33 game.

“I know on paper this is a dynamite team, but when we beat teams, we want to do it respectively,” said Dimond coach Jim Young. “It’s hard, though, because we’re such a transition basketball team and we like to play up-tempo and in-your-face defense, and sometimes when we let up, we become unfocused.”

Dimond was paced by Ione Fischer with 16 points. All five of her shots were from behind the arc, highlighted by her 10-point, second-quarter display.

The Kardinals top scorer was senior Sydney Taylor, who also had 16 points. Teammate Carly Norvelle added nine points.

Young, who is a 1984 graduate of Kenai Central, said he is happy with his team’s play and the balance the Lynx possess on offense and defense. On Friday, Dimond held Soldotna’s Kaillee Skjold, a key player for the Stars, scoreless in the first half.

“That’s the whole thing, we have great shooters and great post players. We got to have a balance,” Young said. “Yesterday, I thought we did a good job at containing Kaillee, we held her to zero points in the first half, and I think Soldotna kind of tanked after that.”

On Saturday, it was a wire-to-wire win for Dimond, which streaked out to a 17-0 start in the first five minutes, 22 seconds, of the game. Kenai was held to only three converted shots in the first half, and all in the second quarter, while Dimond found their success shooting 3-pointers.

“We had a couple breakdowns defensively, but the fact of the matter is that Dimond just shot the ball well, particularly in the first half,” Kenai coach Stacia Rustad said. “We gambled and said we’re going to see how well they can shoot the ball from the outside, because that’s one part of the game we felt they consistently hadn’t done, and their post players were dominating. We packed the key and forced them to shoot from the perimeter, and they still shot well.”

After a halftime lead of 44-14, the Kards managed to up their shooting percentage, and Rustad said she was pleased with the team’s transition defense.

“We set different goals every game, and they’re realistic. We don’t have our heads in the clouds,” Rustad said. “One of our goals this game was to score 30 points, and we had 34. We’re happy with that.”

Kenai leaves the weekend with a 3-8 overall season record.
