Weekend prep hockey roundup

The Soldotna Stars hockey team showed who was boss on Friday afternoon at the Soldotna Sports Center by defeating the visiting Chugiak Mustangs 5-1 in nonconference play.

Dalton Pearson racked up two goals and one assist to lead the Stars, and teammate Jarrett Urban added a goal and two assists. Urban and Pearson were helping each other all game long, providing the assists for each other’s goals. Jonas Perletti and Coel Nelson notched the other two goals.

By the time Chugiak managed to get on the board with a goal from Taylor Garner with 3:55 remaining in the second period, SoHi had already built a 3-0 lead and had the game in hand.

Although the score might have looked pretty dominant for SoHi, the game was rather even, as Chugiak had 23 shots on goal compared to Soldotna’s 22. Cody Harvey was once again in goal for the Stars and took the win with 22 saves on 23 shots.

Soldotna holds a 10-5-3 overall season record.

Chugiak 5, Kenai 3

The Mustangs bounced back from their Friday loss against SoHi with a win over Kenai on Saturday, spurred by four goals from Kris Tomazevic.

Although Chugiak was managing to outshoot Kenai throughout the game, the score was tied at 2-2 heading into the third period, courtesy of goals from TJ Wagoner and Jake Eubank.

Chugiak scored early in the third, but Kenai knotted it up again with a goal from Dalton Dosko with 11:32 left in the game.

Chugiak then put the game away with two quick goals from Tomazevic in a 1:07 span.

“It was a pretty even game, but we kind of beat ourselves,” said Kenai coach Pete Iverson. “(Kenai goalie) Justin Alvey had a good night, but breakdowns cost us late, and that led to penalties.”

Alvey saved 34 of 39 shots sent his way.
