Nikiski basketball takes on CIA

The Cook Inlet Academy and Nikiski basketball teams split a pair of games Monday in nonconference action at Cook Inlet Academy.

 

The Nikiski girls used stifling defense to control the game and notched a 42-21 victory. The Bulldogs got out to a 7-2 lead after one quarter, then went up 25-7 at halftime behind an 18-point second quarter.

Emily Lynch led a balanced attack for the Bulldogs by putting up 11 points.

For CIA, Nicole Moffis had 11 points.

In the boys game, the Eagles pulled out a 62-60 victory in overtime. CIA jumped out to a 20-12 lead after one period, and led 32-19 at halftime. But Nikiski stormed back to take a 38-37 lead after three quarters. CIA would tie the game at the end of regulation, then win it by outscoring the Bulldogs 8-6 in the extra frame.

CIA freshman Timmy Smithwick erupted for 27 points in the contest, while Koebryn Mlynarik had 14 points and Mylon Weems pitched in with 10.

For the Bulldogs, Luke Johnson hit four 3-pointers en route to 17 points, while Seth Carstens added 12 points.
