Applachian State infielders will join Oilers

Alex Leach and Noah Holmes, a pair of infielders from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., will join the Peninsula Oilers this summer.

Leach, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore, batted .263 in 14 games in 2012. In high school he hit .400 as a senior and .318 as a junior for one of North Carolina’s top prep programs. Leach earned all-conference recognition as a senior in the Southwest 4-A Conference, one of the state’s top prep leagues. Leach helped lead that squad to North Carolina 4-A state championship as a sophomore, state championship series as a junior and sectional finals as a senior. He served as team captain as a senior. He is ranked among North Carolina’s top 30 players and the nation’s top 500 players by PG Crosschecker and listed as one of North Carolina’s top 50 players by ImpactScout.com. Leach is from Charlotte, N.C.

Holmes, a 5-10, 195-pound junior, batted .241 in 52 games last season for the Mountaineers. He only committed 11 errors in 122 attempts. In 2011, appeared in 14 games as a true freshman, making five starts at third base. Holmes began the season platooning at third base and opened his career by going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored against Maryland-Eastern Shore (Feb. 19), drew a walk and scored a run after entering as a defensive replacement at The Citadel (March 5) and went 1-for-1 with a run scored after entering games against Elon (March 13) and Georgia Southern (May 21). Noah is from Rockwell, N.C.
