Buoyed by a strong third-quarter performance, the Kenai Central girls took a convincing 56-38 win over visiting Eagle River on Saturday afternoon in Kenai.

Sydney Taylor once again paced the Kardinals with 17 points while teammate Catie Steinbeck played well at the post position to produce 15 points.

Lauren Frost had 12 points to pace the Wolves.

“Our shooting is a constant place for improvement,” said Kenai coach Stacia Rustad. “But, I do think we shot the ball well in that third quarter which put points on the board for us. We just need to find consistency. It’s just a battle that we’ve had all season and will continue to battle until the end of the season — finding offensive consistency.”

Kenai led Eagle River 21-17 at the half after Frost put up a buzzer-beater 3-pointer to close the gap. When the second half kicked off, Kenai was able to find the right plays that put points on the board, with Taylor and Steinbeck combining for 12 points in the quarter.

“Sydney scored her average tonight, and we’ve come to depend on her and her points,” Rustad said. “Catie really stepped up for us today, and that’s huge, because our post scoring is something that’s been plaguing us. She came out and made the shots she should have, and hopefully that gives her and our team some confidence.”

With 5 minutes, 4 seconds, left in the third quarter, Shekinah Young put up a layup for the Wolves that closed the gap to 28-24, but Kenai decided enough was enough by scoring 13 unanswered points to close out the quarter. That gave Kenai a 41-24 lead heading into the fourth, which was enough to keep the Kards afloat.

Eagle River coach Princella Jones was pleased with the effort her team gave.

“I think my girls played a good game overall, they moved the game and transitioned well,” Jones said. “But overall, they had good looks at the basket and good cuts, and some good defense.”

The 56 points that Kenai put up were also a season-high.

“That’s our high, by far, so the kids are feeling good about themselves,” Rustad said. “We’re happy and proud for them. Regardless of who we’re playing and which team, it’s a positive for us.”

The Kards now currently stand with a 4-10 season record.
