Local skiers make Alaska Junior Nationals Team

A pair of local skiers have qualified for the Alaska Junior Nationals team.

After a series of six Besh Cup races, which concluded Sunday in Fairbanks, Soldotna High School skier Sadie Fox qualified as a Junior 2, while SoHi graduate Bree Mucha qualified as an Older Junior.

The Junior Nationals will be in Fairbanks from March 11 to 16.

In the final race of the season, a classic mass start at Birch Hill, Fox finished sixth in the five-kilometer Junior 2 girls race with a time of 19 minutes, 34 seconds, while winner Lydia Blanchet was at 17:27. Fellow Soldotna skier Hannah Pothast was seventh at 19:51.

In the five-kilometer Junior 2 boys race, Levi Michael of SoHi took 19th.

In the 10-kilometer Junior 1 and older women’s race, Mucha was 13th in 37:17, while winner Raphaela Sieber won in 34:39.

Finally, in the 10-kilometer Junior 1 and older men’s race, Lucas Michael of SoHi led area skiers by finishing 28th. Michael was one slot away from making the Junior Nationals team as an Older Junior.
