Lady Stars defeat South

Posted: February 6, 2013 - 11:01pm  |  Updated: February 6, 2013 - 11:09pm

The Soldotna girls routed the South Anchorage Wolverines 59-37 on Wednesday to get off to a good start at the Lady Lynx Prep Tournament at Dimond High School.

Katelynn Kerkvliet topped the Stars with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and teammate Julie Litchfield chipped in nine points and five rebounds. Kaillee Skjold was held to just seven points on the night.

Taylor Murray paced Service with 17 points.

SoHi wasted no time in proving who was boss in this game, as a 15-4 first quarter score indicated. SoHi outscored South 14-9 in the second quarter, leading to a 29-13 halftime lead.

If South had any hopes to making a comeback in the second half, SoHi demolished them by putting up 20 points in the third quarter, which effectively iced the game with a score of 49-19 with one quarter remaining. At one point, Soldotna streaked out on a 20-2 run.

Also, SoHi was effective with it’s transition game, grabbing 16 steals for 25 turnover points (compared to 14 points for South), and out-rebounding South 40-22.

The win improved Soldotna’s season record to 11-6, and advanced SoHi to today’s second-round matchup with West Valley at 4:30 p.m. at Dimond.

Dimond girls 60, Kenai Central 30

The host Dimond Lynx got their tournament off to a good start by defeating the Kardinals on Wednesday.

Ione Fischer paced the Lynx with 14 points. Kenai’s top scorer was Sydney Taylor with 14.

Kenai struggled early as Dimond outscored them 21-5 in the second quarter and held a 33-11 lead at halftime. Dimond’s longest points run was 26-2.

Dimond continued the rampage in the third quarter by getting 18 points, and managed half of their points off of turnovers. Kenai also suffered from poor shooting brought on by Dimond’s defense, only hitting 11-for-48.

Kenai advances to play Palmer today at 6:15 p.m.

Ninilchik boys 53, Kalskag 42

The Wolverines held off the Kalskag boys in the fourth quarter to take a win on Wednesday.

Sevy Belmond led Ninilchik with 14 points, half of that coming in the second quarter. For Kalskag, Joey Davis recorded 17 points.

Ninilchik led 27-22 at halftime, but the Grizzlies crawled back to trail 36-33 after three quarters. However, Ninilchik outscored Kalskag 17-9 in the fourth quarter.
