SoHi edged by West Valley in Lynx Tourney

Posted: February 7, 2013 - 11:07pm  |  Updated: February 7, 2013 - 11:20pm

The Soldotna girls basketball team came up short in a late rally to West Valley in a 50-47 game on Thursday at the Lady Lynx Prep Tournament at Dimond.

Kaillee Skjold led the Stars with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while West Valley’s Caitlyn Brice had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Soldotna struggled the most with its shooting, hitting only 13 of 51 field goal attempts.

The game was a close one throughout, as West Valley took a 13-8 first quarter lead, but SoHi came back with a 20-point effort in the second to grab a 28-24 halftime lead.

Soldotna padded its lead to nine points early in the second half, but the Wolf Pack closed back to within two at the end of the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, West Valley took the lead and built it into a 49-38 advantage, but the Stars closed right back to 49-45 with 16 seconds left in the game.

Soldotna (11-7 overall) will now prepare to play Lathrop on Friday at 2:45 p.m., a game which could move the Stars into the tournament’s fourth-place game on Saturday.

Palmer girls 39, Kenai Central 30

The Kardinals took another loss on Thursday at the Lady Lynx Tournament, suffering again from poor shooting.

Sydney Taylor led Kenai with 10 points and five rebounds, while Kourtney Straight led Palmer with 15 points.

Kenai started fast with an 11-1 scoring run, ending the first quarter with an 11-8 lead. In the second quarter, it was Palmer’s turn to show some magic, as the Moose outscored the Kards 12-2, resulting in a 20-13 halftime lead.

Palmer padded its lead with a 12-5 third quarter scoring run.

While Kenai has produced a tough defense this season, the offensive threat has been inconsistent. On Thursday, the Kards shot 7-for-46 from the field.

Kenai (4-12 overall) moves on to play South on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Kodiak held Seward to only five points in the second quarter, leading to a 17-15 halftime lead for the Seahawks, but Seward was able to distance itself in the third quarter.
