SoHi skaters beat West Valley in OT for one last game

The Soldotna Stars found a way to play one more game of the hockey season by defeating West Valley 5-4 in overtime Friday at the ASAA First National Cup state tournament at the Curtis Menard Sports Complex in Wasilla.

Senior Jonas Perletti had the overtime game-winner for SoHi early in the extra period when he stole the puck on a West Valley bobble. Perletti took the puck on the breakaway and was able to split the defense and knock it in.

“It sure was an exciting game, the kids battled on and wanted to continue playing,” SoHi coach Aaron Swanson said. “It was really a back-and-forth game, and we were fortunate enough to get a goal late in the game.”

SoHi senior Dalton Pearson had a hat trick, including the game-tying goal with a minute left in regulation. Senior Jarrett Urban recorded SoHi’s other regulation goal.

“Jonas had a big play, and he was one of our many seniors that had big plays,” Swanson said. “We were able to create a little traffic at the goal and Dalton put one home.”

Swanson said the win would not be possible without a total team effort.

“It was a big win for sure, and we just wanted to come out and compete and give ourselves a chance to win and play again tomorrow,” he said.

SoHi will play its last game of the season at 9 a.m. on Saturday against the Lathrop Malamutes in a game that will decide the fourth-place state team. Interestingly enough, the SoHi girls basketball team played West Valley and Lathrop on consecutive days this week as well.
