Bears' Zelzer named Star of the Week

Kenai River Brown Bears goalie Marcus Zelzer was named the Combat Hockey West Division Star of the Week on Monday. It is the second straight week the Bears earned the Star of the Week, with forward Alex Jackstadt taking the honor the week before.

Zelzer backstopped the Bears to a 3-1 win and a 3-2 shootout win against the Fairbanks Ice Dogs on Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound goalie out of Green Bay, Wis., made 31 saves in Friday’s win, and stopped all 27 shots on Saturday before leaving early in the third period with a knee injury. Evan McCarthy replaced Zelzer in net and stopped all five shooters in the shootout to preserve the victory.

Except for the missed third period, Zelzer has been in net the whole time as the Bears have not lost in regulation in their last nine games and have won six straight games.

Assistant coach Nick Shackford said on Tuesday that Zelzer’s injury status is the same as when coach Oliver David talked about the injury Saturday. David said Zelzer was taken out as a precautionary measure, and expectations are that he will be ready to play Friday and Saturday at Fairbanks.
