Ninilchik tourney continues

Posted: February 15, 2013 - 12:05am  |  Updated: February 15, 2013 - 12:11am

The Cook Inlet Academy girls rode a dominating first-quarter effort to a 63-45 victory over Unalakleet on Thursday at the Ninilchik Tournament in Ninilchik.

Nicole Moffis led CIA with 17 points, followed by teammate Ashleigh Hammond with 13. Unalakleet was paced by Jonisha Wilson with 20.

The Eagles were on fire early, getting 27 first-quarter points against Unalakleet’s 11.

Cook Inlet advances to the semifinals against Noorvik on Friday at 5 p.m. The winner of that game will play in the championship game on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Soldotna girls 41, Noorvik 38, OT

The SoHi JV team escaped with a win on Thursday by outscoring Noorvik 6-3 in the four-minute extra period.

Haley Miller had four points for the Stars in overtime, and 20 total points in the game. Emily Outwater led Noorvik with 16.

SoHi held the lead throughout most of the game, building a 21-15 lead by halftime and leading 27-20 with one quarter left.

Noorvik then rallied with a 15-8 outscoring effort in the fourth, ending regulation with a 35-35 tie.

Because Soldotna is not able to continue the tournament on Friday and Saturday, the Ninilchik girls passed on Thursday with a rest day, and will be automatically advancing to Friday’s matchup with Unalakleet at 2 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the semifinal game of the loser’s bracket on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Unalakleet boys 76, Noorvik 65

The Unalakleet boys beat Noorvik in an offensive battle on Thursday, getting big scoring games from Tristin Ticket and Stuart Towarak. Ticket had 24 points and Towarak notched 21.

Noorvik’s top scorer was Danny Wells with 27 points.

Ninilchik girls coach Rod Van Saun said Wells’ performance was outstanding, particularly in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Van Saun said the boys tournament, as a whole, has been impressive.

Unalakleet put up 24 points in the second quarter and 21 in the fourth, which ultimately made the difference in the game.

Unalakleet advances to the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Friday against Ninilchik. The winner of that game qualifies for the championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Noorvik will play Cook Inlet Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

CIA boys 58, Chevak 45

Cook Inlet cruised to the victory on Thursday, led by Timmy Smithwick’s 22 points. Teammate Mylon Weems added 18.

Chevak was paced by Guy Atchurian with 13 points.

The Eagle built a halftime lead of 29-17 and was able to hold off Chevak until the end, helped by Smithwick’s 12 second-half points.

The CIA boys advance to play Noorvik at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
