Monday basketball roundup

The visiting Soldotna girls basketball team snapped Nikiski’s seven-game winning streak with a 50-26 victory over the Bulldogs in nonconference action Monday.

 

Nikiski falls to 14-6 overall, while Soldotna improves to 14-8.

The Stars were dominant from the outset, taking a 22-5 lead after the first period.

Kelci Benson made Nikiski pay for leaving her alone at the top of the key. She hit five 3-pointers en route to 19 points, while Kaillee Skjold added 11.

Nikiski was led by the nine points of Emily Lynch.

Soldotna boys 71, Nikiski 43

The Stars improved to 10-11 overall by winning a nonconference matchup Monday in Nikiski.

Like in the girls game, Soldotna took control early, leading 25-8 after the first quarter.

Cory Carver got off to a hot start for SoHi, hitting seven of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter. Preston Penrod and Daniel McElroy each pitched in 11 points for the Stars.

Stephen Hartley paced the Bulldogs with 10 points.

The visiting Eagles notched a victory in a Peninsula Conference game that had to be hastily scheduled because CIA and Ninilchik did not meet up last weekend in the Ninilchik Tournament.

While the Wolverines placed better in the weekend tournament, the Eagles were the better team Monday. CIA held a 40-38 lead entering the final quarter, then outscored the Wolverines 12-5 in the final frame.

Timmy Smithwick led the way for the Eagles with 14 points, while Koebryn Mlynarik hit three 3-pointers for 13 points. Jack Wheeler continued to pour in points for the Wolverines, coming up with 21.
