Fox, Cooper lead Peninsula skiers at state

Posted: February 22, 2013 - 12:07am

A trio of Peninsula skiers recorded top-15 finishes on the first day of the ASAA Nordic Skiing State Championships at Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Thursday.

Kenai Central’s Travis Cooper came home in 13th with a time of 22 minutes, 48 seconds, to top all Peninsula athletes, and was closely followed by Soldotna’s Luke Michael in 14th (22:50) and Homer’s Brian Rowe in 15th (22:51).

“It was a fabulous raceday, conditions were a little challenging at first with the new snow, but we found the good wax, and Travis had a great effort,” said Kenai coach Brad Nyquist. “He’s just sixth-tenths behind Daniel Serventi. It’s going to be a good race tomorrow.”

The chevron-style start on Friday will mean Cooper will be starting right behind the top skiers in the middle lanes.

Eric Backstrum from South won the 7.5-kilometer classic-style race with a time of 21:41. The top four skiers ended up within four-tenths of a second of each other, incredibly close for an interval-start race, which means Friday’s mass-start freestyle race will be the deciding factor for the individual Skimeister title.

“We feel pretty good,” SoHi coach Dan Harbison said. “We had a few individuals that might’ve been higher up than they thought, and a few that were lower than they thought, but we hit the right wax setup and they were able to work with it. It was an interesting day, because it snowed off and on, and the temperature was in a range that made it difficult to get the wax right.”

SoHi’s Sadie Fox was the top girls Peninsula finisher in 17th, with a time of 18:45, and teammate Hannah Pothast produced a good showing in 32nd (19:55). Lydia Blanchet from West won the race with a time of 16:40, 21 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor.

The Soldotna boys team are also currently the fastest Peninsula team, sitting in seventh with a total time of 1:36:12. Kenai is in eighth, just over two minutes behind.

“There’s only seconds separating everyone, so we’re still in a position to improve,” Harbison said. “We’re within 30 seconds for the boys and girls, so that’s very doable.”

Friday’s action will feature a 7.5K course for the girls and 10K for the boys in a mass start using the freestyle technique.
