Two skiers from the Kenai Peninsula helped Team Alaska reclaim the Alaska Cup on Saturday in the Junior Nationals at Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails in Fairbanks.
The cup goes to the team with the most points over the course of the event. Alaska won for the first time since 2008 and only the second time in the last 10 years. Alaska has won the cup 15 times. The next closest is New England with nine.
Alaska tallied 1,439 points, while New England had 1,221.
The Kenai Peninsula had two skiers at the races — Soldotna High School graduate Bree Mucha and current SoHi student Sadie Fox.
In Saturday’s 10-kilometer interval start classic, Mucha finished 21st with a time of 37 minutes, 23.5 seconds. She was 2:57.5 behind winner Hannah Boyer of Team Alaska.
In the five-kilometer Junior 2 interval classic start, Fox was 38th in 19:04.5, 2:26.8 behind winner Julia Kern of New England.
In Thursday’s freestyle sprint races, Mucha made it all the way to the A Final in Older Junior before finishing sixth in that race.
That left her in sixth place overall.
Fox was 37th in the Junior 2 event.
