Nikolaevsk girls cruise past Yakutat

The Nikolaevsk girls got off to a good start at the Alaska School Activities Association Class 1A tournament with a convincing 47-24 win over the Yakutat Eagles on Saturday at West Anchorage High School in the first round of action.

The Warriors dominated with a strong post presence, as they out-rebounded Yakutat 54-29. Junior Nianiella Dorvall grabbed 18 rebounds and teammate Sophia Kalugin brought down 13. Kalugin also led Nikolaevsk with 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting.

“Rebounding and defense is our emphasis, and it definitely showed today,” said Nikolaevsk coach Bea Klaich. “We have to look inside every time. Yakutat knows that, and they like to double- and triple-team our players there. We have plenty of offensive threats on the outside as well, I tell them that they have the green light for those type of shots too.”

Kasia Adams led Yakutat’s effort with nine points.

Of Nikolaevsk’s 54 rebounds, 32 were offensive, which gave the Warriors a lot of second opportunities, and 10 second-chance points.

“Fortunately we have good cleanup work too,” Klaich said. “It could be better. I think the pregame jitters were there a little bit. They had some turnovers that I thought that they shouldn’t be making, but I thought they put together a good four quarters.”

With 5 minutes, 49 seconds, left in the second quarter, Yakutat trailed 16-11, but that would be the closest the Eagles would get, as Nikolaevsk outscored them 11-2 to close out the first half.

Nikolaevsk opened the second half with a 9-3 run, and continued to pad its lead en route the victory. Yakutat only got two total shots off in the third quarter, and Nikolaevsk’s defensive press played a big role. The Warriors also got 19 points off turnovers, while Yakutat only had six.

Saturday’s slate of 1A games were simply just to fill out the winning and losing brackets, and after a rest day on Sunday for all teams, Nikolaevsk will continue in the quarterfinal round with an 8:45 p.m. matchup on Monday against Alak at the Sullivan Arena.
