Duwe named Star of Week

McCarthy is 2nd Star after big sweep of Wenatchee

Soldotna High School product Brad Duwe was named the Combat Hockey West Division Star of the Week on Monday.

Evan McCarthy of the Bears was given 2nd Star. The two were honored after the Brown Bears pulled off a three-game sweep of the Wenatchee (Wash.) Wild on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center, knocking the Wild out of first place in the division.

Duwe, 20, is getting on a roll again after returning from a pair of concussions. The 6-foot-2, 203-pound forward had six points in the series, with two goals and four assists, and was a plus-3.

Duwe did not score Thursday, but had two goals and three assists in a wild, 7-5 win Friday. Saturday, he had another assist.

“Brad has been with us a while and is such an important part of this team,” Brown Bears coach Oliver David said in a released statement. “When he is healthy and playing at 100 percent he has the capability of being a point per game guy and a guy that is a legitimate NCAA Division I prospect. The key now will be making sure his solid play is consistent in the playoffs.”

McCarthy picked up wins in the net Thursday and Saturday, posting a shutout Thursday.
