Nikolaevsk girls hold off Alak

The Nikolaevsk girls basketball team held off Alak for a 53-50 victory Monday at the Alaska School Activities Association Class 1A girls state basketball tournament at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.

 

The victory moves the Warriors into the semifinals of the tournament. Nikolaevsk plays Aniak, which defeated Koliganek 37-34, at 5:15 p.m. today.

After both teams were tied at 11 at the end of the first quarter, Nikolaevsk turned up its pressure defense and took a 34-20 lead into halftime. Alak had 31 turnovers in the game, while Nikolaevsk had 19.

When the Warriors went up by as much as 18 points in the third quarter, Nikolaevsk’s spot in the semis looked secure.

But then Alak stormed back behind the shooting of Kai Nashookpuk and JayJay Aguvluk. Aguvluk had five 3-pointers in the game and finished with 19 points, while Nashookpuk had three treys and finished with 14 points.

When Nashookpuk hit a 3-pointer with 4 minutes, 28 seconds, to play in the game, the Huskies led 47-43.

But Nikolaevsk closed the game with 6-of-10 shooting from the foul line to come out on top.

Kayla Stafford had 12 points to lead the Warriors, while Sophia Kalugin had 11 and Serafima Kalugin and Nianiella Dorvall had 10 apiece.
