Homer Invite cancelled

Snow and ice cover most of the new track at Homer High School.

Due to track conditions, the Homer Invite track and field competition that was scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled.

The high school event, scheduled for the 19th and 20th, was to be the debut meet on the new track the school has built. However, Mother Nature had different plans.

A picture sent in an email shows at least three inches of hard-packed snow and ice on the surface of the track, which Homer track coach Bill Steyer said is Olympic-grade.

Recent temperatures on the Kenai Peninsula have not been ideal for spring sports, as daytime highs in the 30’s have continually been neutralized by nighttime lows in the teens.

The annual Skyview Invite is still scheduled for April 26 and 27 at Skyview High School.
