My apologies for missing the last few weeks of Oilers Corner. We have been very busy with roster changes, schedule changes and most importantly, snow removal from the ballpark! As of today, there is still 6 to 12 inches of snow covering the entire field. Ron Petterson is back as groundskeeper this summer and has his hands full trying to get the field ready for play on June 9. As of today, there are only 37 days till opening day! Hope to see you all there.
As mentioned above, we are finalizing the 2013 baseball schedule, which will include at least 24 home games and an Oilers Baseball Hall of Fame Celebration event at Coral Seymour Memorial Park on June 22. The first pitch will be thrown out on June 9 with the Oilers facing the AABL All-Stars in a 2:00 p.m. matinee, a great opportunity to meet the Oilers on opening day. Players begin arriving in early June for two months of exciting, high-caliber Alaska Baseball League action.
The Oilers are still seeking host families for the upcoming season — people looking for a rewarding experience and a “summer baseball son” for June and July (only seven weeks, with over 21 days on the road). Please contact Kathy Gensel for more information about being a host family at email@example.com or 262-9263 or 252-7504, or call the Oilers office at 283-7133.
The Anchorage Glacier Pilots and Anchorage Bucs are developing an end-of-season invitational tournament, which will be hosted predominately at Mulcahy Park in Anchorage running into early August.
The Oilers, as a team outside of the Anchorage municipality, would incur exorbitant expenses by participating in this season’s event, including transportation, housing and per diem expenses which are not allotted in the Oilers 2013 baseball operations budget. Should the 2013 event develop into a fixture in the Alaska Baseball League, the Oilers will strive toward participating in the season-ending event in the future.
