Thursday prep soccer roundup

The Homer girls soccer team continued their impressive season with a 3-0 shutout win against Nikiski on Thursday at Homer.

Nikiski coach Mandy Adair pulled goalie Rachel Thompson with 10 minutes left as the Bulldogs trailed 1-0, hoping the extra attacker would help their scoring chances.

However, a Nikiski player was charged with a handball near the 70th minute, and the ensuing Homer penalty kick put the Mariners up 2-0.

The Bulldogs now hold a 1-3 season record and are 0-2 in the Northern Lights Conference.

The Mariners got a conference win against the Bulldogs on Thursday in Homer.

A 45th minute goal from Homer proved to be the difference. Nikiski coach Jim Coburn said senior keeper Lincoln Johnson saved nine shots on goal, in a game that was close and tense all the way to the final whistle.

Skyview’s Bailey Blumentritt scored with just two minutes left in the game as the Panthers earned a tie with the Kings at Kenai Central High School in nonconference play.

The game was moved to Kenai because the field at Skyview is not quite ready yet.

The Panthers were staring a loss in the face when Blumentritt put pressure on the Ketchikan keeper as he was trying to clear the ball. The ball bounced off of Blumentritt and into the goal.

“It made the whole team really happy,” Skyview coach Brandon Goggia said of the strike. “It gave them some hope.”

Jake Potts had a goal for Ketchikan in the first half, but that was the only time the Kings could solve Skyview keeper Bailey Jones.

“He kept us alive in the game,” Goggia said of Jones.
