The host Soldotna boys soccer team rolled to a 10-0 victory over nonconference foe Grace Christian on Saturday to move to 4-4 overall.

Luke Trammell and Josh Hieber paced the Stars with a hat trick, while Sean McMullen and Cameron Johnson combined for the shutout in net.

Soldotna assistant Erik Dolphin said the Stars played well, scoring some pretty goals and keeping the Grizzlies off the board.

The goals in the first half came from Eli Sheridan assisted by Trammell, Hieber on a free kick from Gavin Goggia, Trammell on another free kick from Goggia, Christian Hames and Hieber.

In the first eight minutes of the second half, Trammell scored twice, while Hieber scored once. Ben Snow and Patrick Gross finished off with tallies for the Stars.

Dolphin said defender Zach Burns was able to stop a potential one-on-one scoring opportunity. Dolphin added that even as Soldotna started to sub liberally, Gavin Goggia was kept in at defense and was a rock that made sure things went smoothly.

Head coach Darryl Byerley added that some young players got in at the end of the game and showed the future is bright by doing a solid job closing things out.

The host Stars moved their record to 3-1-2 by scoring a late equalizer against the Grizzlies in nonconference play.

Grace took the lead 10 minutes into the game on a goal that happened mostly due to a miscommunication by Soldotna’s defense, according to Stars coach Jimmy Love.

With about 10 minutes left, Journey Miller drew the Stars even by scoring on a free kick.

“The game was played between the 18s on both sides,” Love said. “In the attacking third, both teams had a tough time trying to finish.”

Love said he did not think his team came ready to play, which was disappointing because the Stars had not played since Tuesday.

“I thought we would come hungry and ready to play, but we did not,” Love said. “We now have a game every other day for the next two weeks, so from the mental standpoint that’s a little bothersome.”

The visiting Mariners dropped to 3-2-2 overall after dropping the Saturday nonconference contest to the Warriors.

“Our goal wasn’t to win, it was to use the opportunity to get ready for the next week of conference games,” Homer coach Mike Tozzo said.

Tozzo said his team accomplished that mission. Sophomore Kelli Bishop, a first-year soccer player, got the start in net, allowing Allie McCarron to move out to the field. Tozzo said Bishop came up with some great saves.

On defense, Tozzo said center back Kim Lynn directed a unit that forced Wasilla to take shots from the outside, which was the game plan.

Tozzo said the only problem is the Warriors are one of the best teams in Division I, which meant they were able to convert a few of those difficult shots.

The visiting Mariners recovered from a 1-0 deficit at halftime to notch a nonconference victory Saturday and move to 6-1 overall.

“Today was a legitimate test of the work we’ve been doing over the last week,” Homer coach Warren Waldorf said.

In the second half, Oliver Beck drew Homer even, then Simon Dye converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Waldorf said goalie Tucker Weston had a great one-on-one save, but the victory was a team effort.

“It was a great game to watch,” Waldorf said. “It could have gone either way. I would have been happy to lose or draw, but with a six-hour bus ride it’s easier having come out on top.”

Homer boys 7, Houston 0

The visiting Mariners received four goals from Simon Dye in securing the nonconference match Friday and moving to 5-1 on the season.

Tucker Weston had the shutout in net, while Timothy Blakely, Charlie Menke and Austin Shafford added goals.

Seward girls 14, Voznesenka 0

In a game played Friday at Homer High School, the Seahawks improved to 1-1 in the Peninsula Conference and 1-2 overall.

Lucia Lombardia led Seward with five goals, while Sophia Dow had three goals, Lindy Guernsey had two goals and Alexis Sullivan had two goals. Makaira Williams had the shutout for Seward.

Seward coach Coty Beck said Voznesenka did not have big numbers to work with, while the Seahawks had 17 players available Friday.
