Kenai baseball defeats Soldotna

The host Kenai Central baseball team defeated Soldotna 15-5 on Monday, invoking the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After numerous postponements due to weather, the Kardinals finally got in their first game of the season. The Stars fell to 0-3.

“It was cold out there, and it was our first time out on the field,” Kennedy said. “We struggled on the mound and we struggled at the plate, but that was to be expected.

“The Soldotna pitcher did a heck of a job at the beginning.”

Max Conradi got the start for the Stars. He pitched four innings and gave up five runs — four earned — on three hits.

“After that, we couldn’t get the ball over the plate,” Soldotna coach George Stein said.

The Kards scored eight runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.

For Kenai, Ethan Oliver pitched 2 2-3 innings, giving up three earned runs on two hits. Miles Jones finished up, picking up the win with two unearned runs on four hits in 3 1-3 innings.

David Due took the loss for the Stars.

Hector Rivera was 3 for 4 with two runs for the Kards, while Oliver was 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBI, Dallas Pierren was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI, and Josh Liedes was 2 for 5 with three RBI.

Tyler Fritz was 2 for 4 for the Stars. Gavin Larson led the team with two RBIs.

Kenai hosts Homer on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while the Stars play at Houston on Thursday at 7 p.m.
