Stars top Panthers in softball

The Soldotna softball team defeated Skyview 11-5 in 6 innings Monday in Northern Lights Conference play.

The Stars are now 4-1 in the league and 4-1 overall, while the Panthers are 1-4 and 1-2.

SoHi coach Kelli Knoebel said the win was keyed by Serena Prior and Kaycee Munn.

Prior threw a two-hitter and did not give up an earned run. Munn finished 2 for 2 with a home run, a double and five RBIs.

Knoebel also said Ila Cobb made some great scoops at first base.

“The big thing that cost us was not getting the ball in play with the bats and not handling the ball on defense,” Skyview coach Steve Schoessler said.

He said one of the highlights was when a fly ball popped out of the mitt of shortstop Demery Garrant, only to have second baseman Vicky Oberts snatch the ball before it hit the turf.

“Vicky did a really great job on defense,” Schoessler said. “She was all over the place.”

Sam Reynolds scored three runs for the Panthers.

Skyview travels to Homer for a 6 p.m. game today, while SoHi hosts Houston at 4 and 6 p.m.
