Softball roundup

Skyview's Sam Reynolds delivers a pitch against Eagle River on Thursday at Albrecht Fields in Anchorage.

The Skyview softball team split a pair of games in Anchorage on Thursday.

In the first game, the Panthers took a 9-3 loss to Bartlett.

Skyview got to the diamond just 20 minutes before the first pitch.

“For stepping off the bus, we didn’t play too bad,” Skyview coach Steve Schoessler said. “Once we got warmed up, we were hitting the ball a little bit.”

Demery Garrant was 2 for 3 with a two-run double.

In the second game, Skyview topped Eagle River 8-2 for its second win of the year.

The Panthers played great defense, picking five Eagle River runners off base. Pitcher Sam Reynolds had one of the pickoffs, while Cat Schoessler had the others.

Coach Schoessler also said he moved Demery Garrant to first base and that seemed to solidify the defense.

On offense, the Panthers took control with a five-run first inning.

Reynolds finished 3 for 3, while Molly Hughes also was 3 for 3. Kayla Scroggins scored a pair of runs.

South girls 14, Kenai 1

The Wolverines cruised past the Kardinals in nonconference action in Anchorage.

“They hit the ball very well,” Kenai coach Mark King said. “We also had some defensive errors that cost us some runs.”

King said the Kards were doing a decent job hitting the South pitching, but the hits went right at defenders.

Carly Norvelle was 2 for 2 with a run for the Kards. Hope Steffensen also returned from injury to play her first game of the year at shortstop.

Kenai is 0-3 overall.

“In the last three games, I like what I’ve seen,” King said. “It hasn’t shown up in the score yet, but by the middle of the season I think we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”
