Region II track meet

Cook Inlet Academy and Ninilchik both qualified athletes for the Class 1-2-3A state meet on Friday at the Region II Championships in Talkeetna.

 

Ninilchik’s Jack Wheeler and Cook Inlet Academy’s Madison Orth led the Peninsula by winning three events each.

Wheeler dominated the jumps. He won the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches. He took the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 11 3-4 inches. Finally, Wheeler had a mark of 38—1 1-4 to win the triple jump by almost 10 feet.

Orth also did well in the jumps. She took the long jump in 14—9, and also took the triple jump at 31—9 3-4.

In the 100 hurdles, Orth ran a 17.18 to pick up a third victory. She also finished second in the 100-meter dash.

Zach Taplin gave the Eagles qualifications in another two events. He won the shot put in 46—10 1-4, and also won the discus at 150—9.

Cara Davidson earned the final automatic qualification for the Peninsula by throwing 102—1 to win the discus by more than 10 feet.

The winners of each event qualify for state. The next best four times or marks also earn qualification.
