Next Level: Items on O'Guinn, Duke, Flanagan

Skyview graduate Ivy O’Guinn will represent the University of Alaska Anchorage at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be May 23 to 25 in Pueblo, Colo.

 

O’Guinn, a junior, will make her third appearance at nationals. She has qualified in the 800 and the 1,500. O’Guinn currently sits at No. 6 in the 1,500 with a time of 4 minutes, 26.64 seconds, and No. 7 in the 800 with a school-record time of 2:09.34.

O’Guinn also helped the Seawolves to their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown on Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore.

O’Guinn set the UAA school record in the 800 prelims on Friday, then finished third in three events Saturday. They were the 5,000 at 17:41.43, the 1,500 at 4:28.71 and the 800 at 2:10.47.

SoHi’s Duke finishes 8th in discus

Jessie Duke, a 2011 graduate of Soldotna High School, has completed her sophomore season for the track and field team at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.

Duke qualified for the GNAC championships, held Friday and Saturday at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Ore., with a personal record of 128 feet in the discus and finished the season eighth in the conference. Duke threw 122—6 at the conference meet to pick up the eighth-place finish.

Duke is majoring in education and was named to the 2013 GNAC Academic All-Conference Team.

Kenai’s Flanagan excels at 800 meters

Kenai Central graduate Lierin Flanagan ran in the 2013 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., this past weekend.

Competing for Montana State, Flanagan finished third in the 800-meter run, crossing the tape at 2 minutes, 10.61 seconds. The race was won by Sacramento State’s Morgan Dampier, a Wasilla graduate. In the prelims, Flanagan had run a 2:10.53, a lifetime best.
