Next level: Ostrander, O'Guinn, Penrod news

Preston Penrod, a senior at Soldotna High, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball next year at Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Penrod, a former Skyview player, played his way onto the starting lineup for SoHi this season as a forward, and played a role in the Stars’ Northern Lights Conference run, which ended without a state berth.

2012 Kenai Central graduate Taylor Ostrander finished 22nd in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase event at the NCAA Division-III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wis., this past weekend, with a time of 11 minutes, 22.31 seconds. The freshman competes for Willamette University.

Even more impressive, Ostrander qualified for the event by posting the fastest Division-III time for a freshman in the nation on May 17 in Naperville, Ill. The top 22 athletes for each event qualify for the national championships, and Ostrander’s personal-best time of 11:02.01 jumped her from 31st to 18th on the list.

In addition to improving her position on the national list, Ostrander moved up from ninth to sixth on Willamette’s all-time list in the steeplechase.

Former Skyview track star Ivy O’Guinn narrowly missed qualifying for the 800-meter finals on May 24 at the NCAA Division-II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Pueblo, Colo.

The University of Alaska Anchorage junior’s time of 2:12.22 was good for 12th place in the preliminaries, but only the top nine make the cut. O’Guinn’s personal best is 2:11.74.

On Saturday, O’Guinn also finished 10th in the women’s 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:47.11. Her personal best in that event is 4:25.19.
