Skyview's Gardner, Nikiski's Lincoln Johnson earn wrestling awards

Nikiski’s Lincoln Johnson has earned a Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum.

Johnson was named the winner for the state of Alaska.

The award is created in honor of Schultz, an Olympic and world champion. It is based on excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship and community service.

Johnson won a 182-pound state title for the Bulldogs in 2011, and a 195-pound state title for the Bulldogs in 2012.

Skyview wrestling coach Neldon Gardner was recently named Coach of the Year for the state of Alaska by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

The NWCA said in a press release Gardner, who started coaching wrestling at Skyview in 1990, was honored for leading his team to a second-place finish at the conference meet and a ninth-place result at the state championships.

Gardner has led the Panthers to two Class 4A state championships, and two fall state championships, when wrestling was divided into fall and spring.
