Oilers top Seals again

Posted: June 13, 2013 - 11:00pm

The Peninsula Oilers left Coral Seymour Memorial park as winners for a second straight night on Thursday, beating the San Francisco Seals 6-2.

The win gives the Oilers a 2-1 record in three days against the Seals, and the team will look to keep San Francisco from evening up the exhibition series with one final game today at 7 p.m.

AJ Ramirez played a part in Thursday’s win with two doubles and two runs, Dillon Dobson had an RBI triple, Taylor Tempel hit a two-run homer, and Mike Wieland hit 2 for 3 with two runs and a double.

GJ Strauss received the win by pitching the first six innings for the Oilers. Strauss had a hot hand with nine recorded strikeouts.

“Basically it was just about getting ahead,” Strauss said. “(Catcher) Mike (Wieland) caught a great game behind home plate, it helped me out a lot. He was helping to make adjustments, great pitch-calling on his part, kept the batters off balance. I got in a little trouble, but we were able to get out of it with great help behind me.”

Spencer Mochal — who gave up the two winning runs in Tuesday’s game — was put on the mound in the seventh inning with the Oilers up 6-0, but gave up two runs in 1 2-3 innings and was replaced by Colby Blueberg, who finished out the game.

“They’ve shown that they can swing the bat, they’ve been aggressive, it’s not like we’re completely overpowering them,” Strauss said about San Francisco. “Our pitchers have been able to get ahead and mix it up and keep them off balance, but they’re definitely not a team you want to take lightly.”

After a Noah Holmes single in the second inning scored a run, Turner Clouse nailed a double in the bottom of the third to bring Kyle Hunt and Wieland home and extend the Oilers’ lead to 3-0.

A bit of controversy struck in the top of the fourth inning when Seals batter Ian Horne hit a slow grounder along the third-base line, which initially was inside the line, but rolled out into foul territory. Oilers third baseman Noah Holmes deliberately allowed it to roll out for a foul, and when the umpire called it, a San Francisco coach jogged out to argue the call, which resulted in him being quickly ejected, followed by the ejection of a second Seals coach.

In the end, the Oilers managed to make it out of the inning without a run being scored.

Tempel’s home run left the Oilers with a 6-0 lead, but the Seals began to chip into that lead with an RBI single from Rob Monchak in the seventh inning, followed by a Kyle Schneider sacrifice fly that scored Mark Johnson.

That would be all San Francisco would score, and now the Seals have one more opportunity on Friday to leave the Kenai Peninsula with a split series. Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m., with pre-game Flag Day ceremonies beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.
