Twins, South split contests

The American Legion Twins split with South on the road Sunday, losing the league game and winning the nonleague game.

The Twins are now 3-4 in the league and 4-8 overall. That puts the Twins in ninth place in the league. South improved to 7-3 in the league and 8-4 overall, good for a tie for first place with Chugiak.

Wasilla is in second, and the Twins’ next games are against the Road Warriors. Those will be a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Coral Seymour Memorial Park on Sunday.

The Twins lost the first game 15-5 in seven innings.

Brandon Mahle got the start for the Twins and gave up four in the first. Mahle would give up 10 runs — seven earned — and 10 hits in six innings. He struck out six.

Twins assistant coach Hector Rivera said Mahle didn’t get off to a good start, but the defense didn’t help him after that with four errors.

“South is a pretty decent team,” Rivera said. “We can beat them if we play our best, but we can’t give them any breaks.”

Tyler Fritz pitched the last 2-3 inning, giving up five runs — four earned — on two hits.

The Twins did have 11 hits in the game. Ethan Oliver was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Brian Rowe was 2 for 4 and Justin Wisnewski was 2 for 3.

The second game, a 6-2 victory in a game scheduled for seven innings, belonged to Dallas Pierren.

Pierren pitched a complete game, giving up two hits and two earned runs. He struck out three and walked two.

As if that weren’t enough, Pierren was 2 for 3 with two RBIs at the plate.

“He keeps shining,” Rivera said. “He’s working hard and paying attention to detail.”

Oliver was 2 for 4, while Hector Rivera was 1 for 2 with two runs and Tommie Bowe was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
