Pilots pitching shuts out Oilers

The Peninsula Oilers lost their third straight game, falling 1-0 to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Sunday in Alaska Baseball League play at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers fell to 1-3 in the league and are now four games behind the red-hot Anchorage Bucs, who improved to 6-0 in the league on Sunday by beating the Mat-Su Miners 1-0. The Pilots are 5-3 and two games back.

Missed opportunities in the game were costly for the Oilers. Peninsula left 10 runners on base, compared to only two for the Pilots.

The Pilots broke through for the lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning against hard-luck loser A.J. Quintero, who gave up just three hits in seven innings of work.

The game-winning rally started when Quintero walked Dayne Parker, then was bunted to second by Jacob Rice. After Brody Russell flied out, John Riley singled with two outs to produce a clutch hit the Oilers were lacking all day.

The Oilers had a golden opportunity to come right back in the top of the eighth when Mike Wieland led off with a double. But Dillon Dobson struck out, Adam Sonabend flied out and AJ Ramirez grounded out to end that threat.

Michael RoBards picked up the win for the Pilots, going 1 1-3 innings and giving up just two hits. Brendan McCurry recorded the final five outs for the save.

The Oilers outhit the Pilots 7-3. Andre Mercurio went 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot, while Wieland also collected a pair of hits.

The Oilers stay on the road to face the Chugiak Chinooks today at 7 p.m.
