Kenai Golf Course report

Posted: June 25, 2013 - 10:11pm  |  Updated: June 25, 2013 - 10:19pm

The Kenai Golf Course continues to improve each and every week. The warm weather has put a strain on the watering crew. They are, however, able to water the greens all night, every night. The greens are looking good and are almost all filled in. They are running much faster than normal. The new green on hole 18 is getting better and better. Again, this green is for anyone who does not want to hit over the gully. This, along with the new forward tees on holes four and 13 really make the course more playable for ladies, seniors, and anyone wanting to do something different.

A new course rating will be made with those changes in mind. If you haven’t played lately, take a look at the woods on holes 11 and 12. The woods are being cleared out and it really looks nice. This process will continue all summer. Hopefully, the back nine will be completed in a month or so. The big brush piles will be burned during the winter months. Thanks to Dan Young, the wooded area around hole 3 has been cleaned up. Mr. Young is in the process of moving the brush piles. Thank you, Dan, for all your hard work.

Dan will also be removing the large stump on the left hand side of the 18th green. Good luck, Dan. A special shout out goes to Willy Perkins for fixing our fairway mower when all others have failed. Good job, Willy!

The June Ladies’ Clinic started Monday. 17 ladies participated. The instructors included Mark Griffin, Tommy Carver, Gordon Griffin, Ron Goecke, and Chris Murray. The ladies were divided into three groups, with Tommy Carver working on the long game, Ron Goecke working on putting skills, and Chris Murray and Mark Griffin working on chipping and hitting from the sand traps. Each skill set is worked on during every session. On the final day of the clinic, the ladies will play on the course. The next ladies’ clinic will be July 22, 23, and 24. Ladies, sign up for this clinic quickly because all our ladies’ clinics fill up. Many thanks to all our instructors.

Don’t forget to sign up for our next Atigun Cup Event, which is the Memorial Golf Tournament held on June 29 and 30. The entry fee is $100. This is a stroke play handicap event.

Once a year we come together to honor those who have departed: Butch Anderson, Donnie Morgan, George Navarre, Rita Botelho, and Bill Zubeck. Unfortunately, this list seems to get longer each year. Arby’s, in honor or George Navarre, has donated $500 towards this event. A drawing for door prizes will held at the awards ceremony on the final day of the tournament.
