Kirk Hyman saved his best round ever at the Kenai Golf Course for the final day of the Kenai Open. His gross score of 78 on Sunday enabled him to win with a total net score of 140. He finished one stroke ahead of Gordon Griffin who shot a net 141.
Finishing third with a net score of 143 was Michael Houghton. Fourth place went to Katelin Richards with a net 145. These were Katelin’s first competitive rounds at the Kenai Golf Course! We look forward to seeing more of her.
Rounding out the top five net scores was Chris Morin with a 147. Chris Morin was our gross champion with a total of 155. Gordon Griffin finished second gross with a score of 159. I would like to thank Mark McComsey and Mike Navarre for their generous contributions to our tournament.
Closest to the pin Saturday on the fifth hole was won by Michael Houghton with a shot of 10 feet, 7.5 inches. The ninth hole was won by Mark Griffin with an outstanding shot of 4—2.5. John Glidden won the 10th hole with a great shot of 55 inches. The 14th hole was won by Ken Liedes with a good shot of 8 feet.
Closest to the pin Sunday on the fifth hole was won by Alice Kerkvliet with a shot of 35—10. The ninth hole was won by Michael Houghton with 23—1. Mark Griffin won the 10th hole with a shot of 13—9. The 14th hole was won by Bob Tepp with 18—7.5.
Our Ninth Annual Kenai Golf Course Employees 9 Hole Tournament was held Friday. This tournament was also a celebration of the many years that Ron Goecke spent behind the counter at the Kenai Golf Course. We will miss his expertise and dedication to making golf at the Kenai Golf Course the best it can be.
The team of Lara Griffin, Tammy Maturro, Dan Young and Tommy Carver finished first with a score of minus-5. Finishing second was the team of Ron Goecke, Denise, Keith Stewart, Chris Kimball and Gordon Griffin along with the team of Jake O’Brien, Trystan Bannion, Ben and Kirk Hyman with scores of minus-3.
The teams of Dusty Culbreth, Willie Perkins, Daryl Bates and Mark Griffin, and JD Perkins, Ken Cole, Beau Forrest, and Craig Jung tied for third. I would like to thank everyone for participating in this fun event. Ron, I’m sure you will be reading this in the Clarion from wherever you are. Just so you know, we will all miss you.
Men’s Night
The team of Mark Azzara, Ron Kerkvliet and Brian Wodarek took first place with a score of minus-3 on Thursday. They birdied holes 5, 7 and 8. The team of Max Dye, Ryan Ellis, James Dye and Charlie Kahakauwila won second at minus-2 after a playoff with the team of Greg Harrington, Roy Wells and JE Wells.
Closest to the pin on the fifth hole was won by Mark Azzara with a shot of 10—4. The ninth hole was won by Max Dye with a shot of 45 feet. Closest to the pin on the second shot on the sixth hole was also won by Max Dye with a great shot of 3—9. Sponsors for this Men’s Night were RD’s Barber Shop, and Main Street Restaurant and Bar. Final Atigun Cup Standings
In the Gross Division, Greg Harrington finished in first place with a total of 111 points, followed by Chris Morin with 82 points for second. Third is Doug Jung with 78 points. Gordon Griffin is fourth with 60 points. Fifth is Tommy Carver with 56 points, while Ken Liedes is in sixth with 55 points.
In the Net Division, finishing in first place is Skip Dove with 95 points, followed by Pat Bowen with 88 points for second place. Third place is held by Jessie Wade with 82 points, while fourth place is Michael Houghton with 81 points. Fifth place goes to Kirk Hyman with 76 points.
This coming weekend in the Gross Division the Atigun Cup Playoffs begin. Greg Harrington and Chris Morin each received a first-round bye. Doug Jung and Ken Liedes will square off in Match 1. Match 2 will be between Gordon Griffin and Tommy Carver.
In the Net Division, by virtue of his first-place finish, Skip Dove receives a first-round bye. In the first playoff match, Pat Bowen will square off against Kirk Hyman, and Jesse Wade will play Mike Houghton. Playoffs begin Saturday at 9 a.m. All matches are 18 holes. The finals will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. If you would like to see some exciting golf, you are invited to follow along with the groups.
