Golfer gets hole-in-one at Birch Ridge

Toby Abbott pulled a rabbit out of his hat Sunday afternoon, making his golf ball disappear in a single shot at the eighth for a hole-in-one! Abbott used a six-iron to pull off this incredible feat of magic forever cementing his status at Birch Ridge Golf Course as a ball-striking legend. As if to show off and make his trick even more impressive Toby used a yellow Sponge Bob Square Pants golf ball! For someone that has hit hundreds of great tee shots over the years, and never had one fall in the hole on a par three, I can assure you that I’m not irritated at all by this.

In other news, Anchorage Amateur great Greg Sanders paired with Adam Baxter of Fairbanks to win the AGA Peninsula Jackpot held at Birch Ridge and Kenai Golf Course last weekend. Partners played 18 holes each day (six holes scramble, six holes alternate shot, six holes best ball) to determine a champion. Sanders and Baxter posted a winning score of 66-64-130 gross. Nolan Rose and 14-year-old junior sensation Nick Beeson paired to finish second with rounds of 71-65 to post 136 gross. Local golfers Denise and Sid “The Kid” Cox took second net honors. The tournament was a lot of fun for everyone involved. AGA Commander and Chief, Jeff Barnhardt, does a wonderful job hosting the event. Jeff and the rest of the Anchorage boys proved to be excellent goat herders during their stay on the Peninsula as well. These guys can do more than just play golf! The Peninsula Jackpot is a fundraiser for junior golf on the Peninsula.

The Wells Fargo Pro-Am is next on the tournament calendar. This popular event is scheduled for July 8. Please call the pro-shop for more information or to register! Available slots with Alaska Club Professionals are filling up fast.

Inspirational Senior

League Action

The old golfers were at each other’s throats Monday morning battling for senior supremacy. Lost in the euphoria of golf glory the seniors forgot to leave any results. We do know that Steve Hammarstrom is the best of the bunch, evidenced by his ball winning closest to at the sixth. Dan Mortensen captured closest to honors at the eighth and Jim “Ice” Bennett made the long putt at the finishing hole.

Tuesday Morning

Ladies League

Tuesday Morning marked the ladies’ first potluck of the 2013 season. Despite all the enticing food available after the round, the girls still managed to get in 9 holes and polish their tans. The “First Lady” Tanna Chenault paired with Susan Jelsma, Cheryl Hammarstrom, and Diane Simmons to win low gross in a team scramble competition. Georgia “Slick Wheels” Bentley joined Louis “Robbing the Cradle” Schadle, Wilda Bush, and Tanya Boedeker to finish low net. Diane Simmons hit the best golf shot at the eighth for closest to.

Tuesday Night Couples

Illustrious love was in the air Tuesday night as Birch Ridge power couples took home all of the money despite constant hounding from local paparazzi. Susan Jelsma (presumably with a little help from Darell) capped off her wonderful day by backing up her ladies league win with another first place finish at Couples Night. Dave and Sharon Keating romanced their way to a second place finish while Mike and Tanna Chenault politicked their way into third. The couples played a format only Bill “The Thrill” Engberg could concoct. A day later we’re still attempting to decipher all of the rules... Only time will tell what madness the lovers will produce next Tuesday!

Golf Joke of the Week

A golfer playing in a two-man alternate shot tournament drove his tee shot to the edge of a green on a par three.

His partner, playing the second shot, chipped it over the green into a bunker. Undaunted, the first golfer recovered with a fine shot to within one foot of the hole.

The second golfer nervously putts, and sent the ball one foot past the hole, leaving the first golfer to sink the putt.

“Do you realize that we took five strokes on an easy par-three?” says the first golfer.

“Yes, and don’t forget who took three of them!” answered his partner.
