Oilers and Pilots

The Peninsula Oilers split a doubleheader with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Wednesday evening at Mulcahy Stadium, winning the first game 3-0 and dropping the second 2-0, both in seven innings.

In the first game, the Oilers managed to keep the Pilots to one hit, as G.J. Strauss pitched 6 1-3 innings with one lone hit and two strikeouts. Colby Blueberg pitched the final two outs to record the save.

Strauss nearly had a perfect game, keeping a zero in the Pilots hit column until only two outs remained. Kewby Meyer managed a single off Strauss at the bottom of the seventh inning.

David Olmeda-Barrera was moved up the batting lineup to second, a good decision, as he ended up hitting 2 for 4 with one run, while teammate Michael Hoo hit 1 for 3 with two RBI and a triple.

Dillon Dobson got the scoring started in the first inning when his single allowed Olmeda-Barrera to score for an early 1-0 lead. It wouldn’t be until the fourth inning that the scoring would start up again, when Hoo’s triple brought Noah Holmes and Kyle Hunt across home plate.

From there, it was all on Strauss’s shoulders to keep it that way.

In the second contest, both teams had seven hits, but the Pilots were able to take advantage of their men on base, getting their two runs in the second and third innings.

Cody Repenning received the loss for the Oilers, pitching the first three innings with two runs and no strikeouts before Turner Clouse was put in for the fourth and fifth innings.

Chris Hoo hit a double for the Pilots that scored Kevin Viers in the second inning, and one inning later, Jacob Rice scored off a single from Kewby Meyer.

The Oilers had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, but got nothing out of it.

The two games leave the Oilers with a 3-4 Alaska Baseball League record, 2 1-2 games behind the Mat-Su Miners, who took over the top spot in the standings and will welcome the Oilers today at 7 p.m.
